On this day in 1976, an article appeared in New York magazine, written by Nik Cohn, entitled “The Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night.” That nonfiction article became the inspiration behind the movie “Saturday Night Fever.” The writers of the film relied heavily from Cohn’s article. However, the article was completely fabricated. None of the people profiled actually existed. Cohn finally admitted his fraud in 1994. But, to this day, “Saturday Night Fever” remains an iconic film on the disco era.
