Friday Fun Facts: Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman was born on this day in 1819. His most well-known work is Leaves of Grass. He originally self-published the book with 12 poems. By the time the last edition came out, shortly before his death in 1892, it contained almost 400 poems. His poems include “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” (originally published as “Sundown Poem”) and “Oh Captain, My Captain,” which was about the Lincoln assassination.

  1. Love this. According to today’s “Google Doodle,” it also happens to be the birthday of the gentleman associated with creating the Petri dish. So I’ve learned TWO interesting facts already this morning!
